I know that I don’t know everything
(and I’m okay with that).

I remember it as if it were yesterday.

It was 9:05am on a Thursday and I was cranky, cold, and attempting to muster up enough courage to get out of bed. As per my usual routine (and to stay in bed just a little bit longer) I mapped out my daily schedule and checked my email.

Left swipe, delete. Left swipe, delete. Oh, wait—that’s new.

“Internship/Part-time Design Firm” was the title of the email. I thought to myself, “this can’t be real, I haven’t applied anywhere!” Of course, being the occasional Curious George I am, I took a glance at Kevin’s website. Clean, well-written, organized, and exactly the type of design work that I wanted to do post-college. I figured I would go for it, and here I am.

With three months of experience at Creative Mellen behind me, I am more than happy to say that it has helped me grow tremendously as a designer in such a short period of time. I have a new appreciation for the value of sketching, brainstorming, and (lots of) coffee. With his creative and innovative mindset, Kevin has opened up many doors for me I never thought possible. I never once felt like just another intern—instead, a trusted fellow creative. Creative Mellen has inspired me to challenge my abilities and allow myself to learn through failure. I know that I don’t know everything, and I’m okay with that. The design world is constantly changing and Kevin has (and will continue to) prepare me for bigger and better things.

As I continue my adventures at Creative Mellen, I am happy to say that I’ll be working in a field that I love. It’s not a job, but more of a lifestyle.

Cheers.

And the winner is…

It's another season of award competitions and once again Creative Mellen received some good old hardware! We took home a Gold for the Law Office of Patrick Jennetten web site and a Silver for our participation in the Iowa Brag campaign. Additionally we won another honor at this year's Educational Advertising Awards for Step Charter Schools web design and development. As always we couldn't have done it without our trusted partners and wonderful clients.

Art as Paper and Wood

The company name says it all. Local artist Robert Slotterback creates artwork in the medium of only paper and wood. He came to Creative Mellen in need of a fresh and modern identity that represents his unique style. We were inspired by some of his small furniture pieces and unique approach to how he constructed them. Focusing on the unique corner construction of some of these pieces helped create the symbolism of the letter “A” to represent “Art” with a paper icon backdrop. We then created a custom designed website that highlighted the detail of his artwork utilizing Shopify's simple e-commerce platform. Check out the site and see all he has to offer at www.artpaperwood.com!

A New Beginning

As I leave Creative Mellen for Pear Deck, I'm happy to know that I've gained an incredible amount of experience from my time designing here. I learned how to collaborate with others, tackling projects big and small. There were also many moments when I was given the opportunity to run things on my own and I cannot express the excitement that came when I got to call a finished work mine. The guidance and advice given to me, from Kevin, helped me to produce a large body of work that pushed me far beyond what I was capable of only months ago, and for that, I am truly grateful.

When I last wrote here, I said that I was open to all of the possibilities that every designer has before them. After graduation, I took this open-mindedness and jumped into the world of design, working with Kevin, a small publishing company, and on my own as a freelance designer. Now, I'm happy to say that I'm still open to endless possibilities in design, but I'm excited to focus on helping Pear Deck grow. Creating engaging design has always been a passion and challenge for me, so I look forward to working with Pear Deck's team to create a product that helps improve students' learning process.

As I say goodbye, I hope to express that I'm extremely proud of the work I've done here and it would not have been possible without Kevin's encouragement. Thank you, Kevin, for all of your help as I've made my way out of graduation to working as a full-time designer!

Taking Center Stage

As Creative Mellen embarks on a rebranding project with the University of Iowa's School of Music, and the construction of their new state-of-the-art facility being built, it was clear we needed a viewbook to bridge their current strengths with the exciting future ahead. It's a place where students can take center stage both now and when the new facility will be complete. We focus on success stories and facts of the program while visually representing music in both performance and theory. Creative Mellen is looking forward to the brand launch and grand opening in early 2016! Stay tuned.

Protecting Your Rights

With the launch of the Law Office of Patrick Jennetten and their desire “to not be like every other law firm,” it was clear to focus on modern aesthetics and messaging to help establish the new brand. Creative Mellen created the new identity to communicate the protection of its clients rights and how the law office will fight for them. This fun, yet strong logo gave way to the new website design which outlines in simple language their offerings and how they can help. It's a fresh approach to a very traditional industry — helping them stand apart from those having similar offerings.
