Iowa Writers' House

A Welcoming Community for Writers

Iowa Writers' House Logo—an open book with a bookmark standing up like a chimney

Iowa Writers’ House is a nonprofit concept whose mission is to centralize access to Iowa’s literary resources in a single organization that provides programming, workshops, and a welcoming community for all. Founder and Executive Director Andrea Wilson reached out to Kevin Mellen to help with its identity during its formation.

Identity Design

With a world-class writing program at the University of Iowa and Iowa City being a designated UNESCO City of Literature, the Iowa Writers’ House provides for those visiting or working within the community a “home” to be inspired by. It isn’t just the home of their workshops, it’s also a B&B for writers.

We created a logo that identifies the house as a writing organization with its simple paper and bookmark iconography. The intentional uses of its house-like shapes and bookmark as a chimney reinforces the physical house as well as the community. Having open pages invites the viewer in as a symbol of an open door. This, paired with a classic font treatment used in many publications and books, creates an identity that helps brand the Iowa Writers’ House as an open door to the literary community.
